Visualizing Utilization of Community Solar in US States

Insights

Utilizing the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s (NREL) Sharing the Sun Community Solar Project Data, which contains project data on community solar installations across the United States interconnected through December 2022 (updated through June 2023), New Energy IQ’s latest visualization explores which states are leading and which are trailing leveraging the rankings made available within the dataset. What’s abundantly clear is that while there are obvious gaps in the utilization of community solar in regions including many of the Gulf States (e.g. Alabama and Mississippi) and Upper Plain States (e.g. North and South Dakota), there are also states in those same regions that are on polar opposite ends of the ranking spectrum (Minnesota in the North and Florida in the South).
